Counting Syllables Strategy
This is a very simple and easy-to-implement tool for writing rap songs.
If you feel like you are constantly having to speed up and slow down your flow, it’s probably because your syllable count is all over the place.
For each couplet (two lines) you write, try to match the amount of syllables per line as closely as possible.
This helps to make sure that each line takes up the same amount of time. If one line has eight syllables, and then the next line has 12 syllables, you’re going to have to speed up your flow to get every word within that bar, which will make the flow seem sloppy in some cases.
A Few Examples
- SU-per-man ain’t sa-vin shit (7 Syllables)
- Girl you can jump on SHA-dys dick (8 Syllables)
- Straight from the hip, cut to the chase (8 Syllables)
- I tell a mu’fuck-in slut to her face (10 Syllables)
- Play no games, say no names (6 Syllables)
- EV-er since I broke up with what’s her face (10 Syllables)
- I’m a DIFF’-rent man, kiss my ass (8 Syllables)
- Kiss my lips, bitch why ask (6 Syllables)
- Kiss my dick, get my cash (6 Syllables)
- I’d RA-ther have you whip my ass (8 Syllables)
Word Counter Tool
If you need a little extra help getting started, I highly recommend WordCalc, which will calculate how many words are in a song if you want to copy the lyrics from a lyric site and drop them into the calculator:
It’s always interesting to see the word count to your favorite songs which will help you get a better understanding of it’s flow.
