How To Find Stressed Syllables
Finding the stressed syllable in words is easy. Say a word out loud and the part of the word that rises in pitch or is said for the longest amount of time is the stressed syllable.
You can also say the capitalized parts of these word to determine which part of the word is higher in pitch by saying them out loud.
Start with:
- DA-da
The first half of the word is said louder and in a higher pitch such as in “PER-son”.
Now try:
- da-DA
The second half of the word is said in a higher pitch such as in the word “in-CASE”.
Additionally, if you ever want to know for sure what the stressed syllable is in a word, you can visit Dictionary.com and type the word in. Once you find your word, the BOLDED part of the syllable break-down is the stressed syllable.
Other sites like Merriam Webster, Rhymezone, or Oxford do not show the stressed syllable as clearly, which I found interesting.
