What Are Syllables? Let’s Break Some Down!
A syllable is the slightest portion or amount of speech in a word. It’s the smallest conceivable expression in a part of a word. That’s why syllables are pieces of broken apart words. It’s how words are broken up in a language in order to show the element of the word and how to properly pronounce the word.
If you know anything about where language comes from or how words are based on prefixes and Latin, this is a bit more understandable. Fortunately, you don’t have to know any of that to truly understand what syllables are or how to find them in words.
Basically, it allows you to sound out a word piece by piece and be able to say it correctly, such as:
- Fast (1 Syllable)
- Per-son (2 Syllables)
- Beau-ti-ful (3 Syllables)
- In-for-ma-tion (4 Syllables)
- Break-fast (2 Syllables)
- Ba-nan-a (3 Syllables)
- To-Mor-Row (3 Syllables)
- Un-i-vers-i-ty (5 Syllables)
